Radically Lost

Authored by Deglet Ovrosco Atheists in Foxholes? I was always led to believe that there are no atheists in foxholes. From first- hand experience while a participant in Operation Desert Storm in 1990-1991, my belief in this truism was pretty much confirmed.

Before the ground war, our church tent was sparsely populated to say the least. However, once we got closer to invading Kuwait, that same tent was packed to standing room only. This was really exciting to see.

Foxes playing The tent service was somber because everyone there recognized the fact that at any moment anyone of us could meet Almighty God and stand before Him in judgment.

Twenty-three years later, I discovered that the axiom "there are no atheists in foxholes" is not true. Recently I discovered that a high school acquaintance is a member of Atheists in Foxholes which is a group of active duty and retired military members who are not only proud of their atheistic stance, but boast about it and, quite frankly, seem to revel in it.

When I discovered this website, I decided to read some of the blog comments of these atheists. I must admit, it scared me to my core. It didn't scare me for myself as I know that when I die, Jesus will say, "Well done, good and faithful servant." It scared me for them because their eternal fate would be sealed if they die in their sins. While they are alive, they are taking a stance, they are their own person. They owe no allegiance, love, or desire to submit to the God who created them. They are the captains of their souls so to speak.

I have a feeling in my heart, that some of them, by their words, are not as true to atheism as their boastful words proclaim.

So what can I or any Believer do for these radically lost souls? We can pray that the Lord will penetrate their hardened hearts so that they recognize their lost condition and seek His forgiveness and salvation.

"Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest." Matthew 9:38 NRSV. I urge you to pray for these people and pray that God will use each of us to reach these radically lost souls.
